Unlock True Transparency in Recycling with EcoLedger™

Chain of Custody

Why Chain of Custody for Recyclable Materials Matters

The journey of recyclable materials from the moment they are placed in a recycling bin to their transformation into new products demands trust, transparency, and accountability. Our Chain of Custody Solution, powered by the EcoLedger™ platform, is designed to deliver the trust and transparency to assure effective recycling for organizations of every size and sector.

Small businesses, municipalities, corporate campuses, universities, arenas, and stadiums need the ability to accurately measure and track recycled material trends. This is more than a sustainability goal; it is a business imperative. Traditional recycling programs often struggle with data gaps, contamination, and a lack of visibility, making it difficult to prove environmental impact or meet regulatory and ESG requirements.

What is Chain of Custody?

Chain of custody refers to the documented and unbroken trail that tracks the movement and handling of materials through each stage of the recycling process. For example, in the recycling of plastic bottles and aluminum cans, chain of custody begins when a consumer places an item in a recycling bin. Ideally, each step, including collection by facility staff, transfer by a hauler, sorting at a Materials Recovery Facility (MRF), delivery to a processing plant, and conversion into new products, would be logged and verified.

However, in many traditional recycling programs, this process is fragmented. Materials are often mixed, data is lost, and there is little visibility into what happens after collection. This can lead to contamination, untraceable losses, and uncertainty about whether recyclables are truly being transformed into new bottles or cans.

WWI Current Closed Loop
The recycling models described above reflect a common practice in the efforts to build a closed-loop program. Those programs fall short because of the lack of vital transparency and documentation of the collection and handling of recycled materials. Turning Transparency into Action

Are you struggling to track your recycling efforts and prove your sustainability impact? EcoLedger™ provides the clear, verifiable data you need to identify inefficiencies, reduce waste, and meet your environmental goals.

The Verified Chain of Custody Advantage

Data Collection You Can Trust

A verified chain of custody is more than just a record-keeping tool; it is a powerful driver of trust, efficiency, and value throughout your recycling program. By ensuring every step in the journey of your recyclables is documented and auditable, your organization gains a competitive edge in sustainability and operational excellence.

Waste Wise Innovation brings deep expertise in recycling logistics, data integrity, and environmental compliance. We know the obstacles, such as material loss, inconsistent reporting, and lack of traceability, and we have built EcoLedger™ to overcome them. Our team partners with you to ensure smooth implementation, staff training, and ongoing support. EcoLedger™ works in combination with Material Authentication Units and Connected Infrastructure Analytics data management tools to deliver a verifiable chain of custody via:

Bin-Level Data Collection

Every recycling bin equipped with Material Authentication Unit data logging technology captures precise data on material container profiles, capacity status, and collection events. This granular approach ensures that every item’s asset journey is accounted for from the start.

Connected Access Control and Quality Assurance

The Material Authentication Unit technology includes localized barcode scanners that read the package labels of deposited items. This mechanism restricts access to prevent unlisted, non-recyclable materials from entering the bin while accurately logging the classifications and volume of accepted deposits.

Digital Ledger of Verified Recycling Activities

From facility staff collection to hauler pickup and delivery at processing plants, EcoLedger™ maintains a secure, tamper-proof digital record. Each handoff is logged, creating a transparent, auditable trail for every batch of recyclables.

Performance Reporting and Analytics

Connected Infrastructure Analytics delivers intuitive dashboards and automated reports, empowering sustainability teams to track diversion rates, identify trends, and demonstrate compliance with local, state, and national recycling mandates.

Scalability for Any Environment

Whether you manage a single storefront or a multi-venue campus, our solution adapts to your needs. Material Authentication Units retrofit to most recycling bins. Connected Infrastructure Analytics provides bin management data to support existing waste management workflows and scales effortlessly as your sustainability program grows.

Recycle Smart Monitoring System™

The Recycle Smart Monitoring System™ (RSMS) provides a method to measure the fullness of a recycling bins. The Topper Stopper™ units equipped with RSMS determine the depth of an empty bin, then check the bin depth at specified intervals. Notifications are sent out via text message and/or email when bins reach a specified level of fullness. This works on varying sizes of bins because the system obtains the depth each time a bin is emptied (or replaced).
