Our last post here was in June. That gap was deliberate.
Earlier this year we wrote that less technology, applied more carefully, beats more technology applied everywhere. That post was the easy part. Saying it is one afternoon. Rebuilding around it is the rest of the year.
Here is the question we have been sitting with:
A property gets charged for contamination it cannot see, in a load it did not watch being assembled, measured by a party with an interest in the number. Everyone in the building knows the recycling program is underperforming. Nobody can say where, when, or by how much.
We spent our early years trying to answer that at the bin itself. The pilots worked. The approach did not scale the way a property needs it to, because every bin became a device, and every device became something to maintain. The insight held. The instrument was wrong.
So we have been rebuilding around a simpler premise: the material itself is the record. Everything a property needs to know about how well it recycles is already present in what gets collected. The work is in reading it consistently, at the right moment, without asking a facilities team to babysit anything.
We are not ready to describe what that looks like in practice, and we would rather say nothing than announce something we are still proving. What we can say is that it measures performance before material leaves the property, from bin to back of house to dock, and that it produces numbers a property can take to a hauler conversation.
More when it is real.
If you manage recycling at a property and you have ever been handed a contamination charge you could not trace, we would genuinely like to hear how you handled it.
